Cutty Wren Folk Club
12 Feb 2004
Guest: Sun Inn Club Swap
1.
Ron Angel, organiser of the Sun Inn Folk Club, Stockton, started the
night with a couple of songs: “Side by Side” and “I live not
where I love”.
2.
Next it was our George’s turn. He forsook his bagpipes for a bit of
singing: “Africa Star” and a comedy spoof “The Folk Singer”.
3.
Stockton’s Ian McLennan sang “The Broken-Hearted Tailor”
followed by his own “The Knocking Shops of Leeds”.
4.
Our Brian Withers gave us a couple of poems.
5.
Another Sun Inn regular, John Lawson, tried to contact the dead for
the words of “Matt Highland” but followed it with a Hartlepool song
that didn’t mention the monkey.
6.
Hazel Bolton, an old friend of the club, sang Graham Miles’ “Sea
Coal” and followed it with “Someday the Wars will be over”.
7.
Steve Dawes (Sun Inn) introduced the first instrument of the night.
“Rodney & Brenda” was new to us but “Donegal Danny” was
something we could all join in with.
8.
Les & Ian, Cutty Wren regulars and future guests brought us nicely to
the Break with “Caroline” and “Navaho Rug”.
9.
Real professionals, they insisted on posing for this one!
10.
Trevor Taylor, who recently returned to the club after an absence of
several years in which he gained an MA degree, started the second half with
one of his Music Hall ditties, “Poor Jim”.
11.
Mick Shortle of the Sun Inn sang “The Treadmill Song”.
12.
Our own Arthur Jones sang “All for me Grog”, accompanying
himself on guitar and harmonica.
13.
Trevor Lister, who is a regular at both clubs, added more humour with
his version of “Captain Valliant”.
14.
The old favourite “Wild Rover” was the choice of Cutty
regular, Tony.
15.
Cutty regular, Dave Verrill, brought a touch of the sea with
“Black Walled Frigate”.
16.
Mike Gardiner’s powerful voice and guitar did justice to “Fields
of Gold”.
17.
John T finished the Cutty Wren regulars with a couple of songs: Eric
Bogle’s “Leaving Nancy” and “I’m a Rover”
18.
After the Raffle (6 prizes), the Sun Inn Company, also known as The
Stormy Weather Boys, finished the night with some sea shanties…
19.
& 20.
…to the great appreciation of the audience.
21.
So it was one more for the road from The Stormy Weather Boys.
